Mann pointed out that Ferrari and others felt that it was actually safer to be flung from the car in the event of a crash rather than caught inside of it. (And one of the classic cars seen in the movie is owned by, of all people, Nick Mason, the drummer from Pink Floyd.) Driver recalled racing on the top of an open chassis on an abandoned airstrip and joked that there were no seatbelts - but that was just not part of the culture at the time. Research meant actual racing for much of the cast in Modena, Italy, and a track in Southern California.
